Should you wet your toothbrush before brushing? Dentists give the definitive answer

Should you wet your toothbrush before brushing? Dentists give the definitive answer

The question recently sparked a debate on Twitter.

Dentists say wetting the brush before applying toothpaste is more comfortable

In such a divisive world, even something as innocuous as whether you wet your toothbrush before applying toothpaste can become a polarising issue - as proven by a recent debate on Twitter.

Users of the social media website divided into several factions over the topic: those who stick toothpaste straight onto their dry toothbrushes; those who rinse the brush under the tap beforehand; and those who apply the paste and then wet their brushes.

"Do y'all wet the toothbrush first, or put toothpaste on first?" asked one Twitter user.

"Wet the toothbrush, put toothpaste on , wet that boy again . Then brush . That's law," replied another Twitter user.

"Um no just put the toothpaste on THEN wet the brush smh," said another.

But when everything ends up damp in your mouth anyway, does a sprinkling of water before applying toothpaste really affect the plaque-tackling abilities of a tooth-brushing session?

No, British Dental Association, scientific adviser, Professor Damien Walmsley told IBTimes UK.

"A dry brush will increase friction with the bristles while a wet toothbrush adds moisture and for most people, makes the experience more pleasant," he said.

"Whatever your preference, what's essential is that teeth should be brushed twice a day for at least two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste, including last thing at night."

Dr Lisa Creaven of Spotlight Whitening also recommended wetting the toothbrush with warm water prior to brushing for a smoother brushing experience.

She told IBTimes UK: "Although toothpaste contains water that will naturally foam the paste, lubricating the brush prior can make the brushing experience that bit more comfortable.

"There is no right or wrong but again the more comfortable it is, the longer you are likely to brush for and that is what's important."

What is key, however, is not rinsing the mouth immediately after brushing, according to the NHS. Instead, simply spit out excess toothpaste.

Rinsing straight away "will wash away the concentrated fluoride in the remaining toothpaste, thus diluting it and reducing its preventative effects."

5 Ways Charcoal Can Improve Your Skin & General Well-being -

The hype is real. Charcoal has been taking over social media with those infamous peel-off masks. But the question is, do they really work?

1. DIY Underarm Lightening

Dark underarms come from regular deodorant and shaving. The aluminum-based active ingredients pretty much “rust” in your armpits over time from being packed in the lymph nodes. Try the beauty hack below for a lighter underarm skin.

2. Use charcoal as… a teeth whitener

LOL. Sounds real off right? How can something so black have a super whitening effect? Well, it does!  Mix it with enough water to form a dense paste, which you will use to brush your teeth with for at least three minutes. Rinse profusely and then brush your teeth normally with your usual toothpaste. No time for DIY? You can buy activated charcoal onJumia for N3,000.

3. Use charcoal as… a soap

It keeps getting weirder right? LOL. Charcoal face soap seems to be everywhere right now, along with charcoal face masks and bath bombs. It’s easy to understand why – charcoal is fantastic for the skin. It binds to dirt and oil and pulls it out of pores, leaving skin clean and refreshed. Because of its oil absorbing properties, it’s especially fantastic for oily skin. Making your own charcoal soap is a ridiculously long process, so skip the stress and buy handmade charcoal soaps. On the average, charcoal soapscost about N2,000.

4. Soothe and heal bites, cuts and skin irritations

It is believed that Egyptians have used Charcoal to heal wounds for centuries and this practice has become globally accepted. Activated charcoal can help speed healing and relieve the symptoms. For minor skin ailments’including insect bites, stings, cuts, scrapes and minor infections’activated charcoal can be applied topically.  To make the paste: slowly add water to a bit of activated charcoal powder and mix until it is a spreadable consistency.

Hair volumizer is ideal for Fine, straight, limp locks or curly hair that tend to fall flat. Apply just enough to saturate your roots. When your hair feels weighted down it’s usually not only a feeling. If you’re carrying around enough dirt, your hair will start to sag and regular shampooing may not be getting it all out. Regular shampoos remove surface dirt, but activated charcoal will pull out even more.  Spritz it on wet or dry hair, as close to the scalp as possible. Then, using a hair dryer and a big, round brush to lift locks, aim heat at the roots. (This product needs a blast of heat to work: If it air-dries in your strands, it won’t provide lift.) The other difference and this is big, is that activated charcoal isn’t going to leave the residue regular shampoos will, so your hair will feel lighter and have more volume.

Hairstylists decry low patronage as women embrace wigs

Hairstylists decry low patronage as women embrace wigs

Some hair stylists in Lagos on Sunday lamented that they had been experiencing low patronage recently due to the current economic realities in the country.

They also attributed the lull in their activities to the increase in the prices of materials normally used for making hairs.

They added that many of their customers had resorted to wearing already-made wigs or having their hairs cut.

Mrs Modupe Alabi, a professional hair stylist in Ogba near Ikeja, said that most of her customers no longer come to the saloon to make their hairs.

“They prefer using wigs because they are affordable and easy to maintain,” she said.

Mrs Helen Ozioma, another hair stylist said that she increased her charges because she was spending so much on fueling her generator due to lack of electricity supply.

“It’s very challenging to attend to customers when there is no power supply, you need the power to dry and style the hairs as well as make customers comfortable.

“The economic challenge is not helping matters and I can’t boast of attending to six customers in a day, it is really challenging,” she said.

Some women also affirmed that it was expensive to visit the saloon or pay for the services of hairdressers, adding that they had resorted to wearing wigs.

A wig maker, Mrs Faith Victor, said the prices of wigs have gone up now as a result of high demands by women.

She added that this also depended on the quality, length and style.

“Some of these different trending wigs are the invisible lace closure wigs, million twisted braid wig, straight human hair wig, full bouncy human hair wig, Peruvian lace wig and full curls wigs,” she said.

A civil servant, Mrs Shade Adams, said she had to cut her hairs because it was expensive to visit the saloon and that she had also embraced the use of wigs.

“Before now, I used to budget between N8,000 and N10,000 for my hairs monthly but the recent economic reality has changed everything, I now spend up to N20,000 in a month.”

She said this had affected her other bills and because “I cannot cope, I have to resort into cutting my hairs and bought different styles of wigs which I wear whenever I want to go out.”

Mrs Faith Obunwa, a businesswoman, said that wearing wigs was cheaper, comfortable and easy to maintain.

“I do not have to sit for long hours to braid or loosen my hairs; I do not have to feel that pain when the hairdresser is making my hairs.

“I have also avoided the pain that women have to endure for days after making their hairs.

“It is true that the prices of wigs have increased but they are still better and cheaper than visiting the saloon,” she said.

In her view, Shade Dapo, a student, said that she had been using wigs to cut down on her expenses.

“Being a student, it is not easy to make my hairs regularly, again, due to the current economic challenges.

“My friends help me to weave my hairs and I wear my wig whenever I am going out, especially, for special outings and lectures.

“Wearing wigs is cheaper because there is no money to make hairs and there are better things to spend money on,” she said.

She said that wig was trending now and most women preferred to buy wigs than patronizing hair saloons.

“They are cheaper, comfortable, profitable, and easy to maintain, ” Dapo said.

Ladies Only! Do You Know You Can Use Garlic To Cure Vaginal Infection (READ THIS)

Ladies Only! Do You Know You Can Use Garlic To Cure Vaginal Infection (READ THIS)

Garlic kills yeast. Those who bake bread know not to add garlic while the dough is rising or it will kill the yeast. Instead, garlic is added to the dough after it has risen, just before baking it in the oven.

A fresh garlic clove can easily cure a yeast infection. The trick is to catch the infection early. A woman who suffers from frequent yeast infections knows the feeling well.

Once you notice the itching, take a clove of fresh garlic and peel off the natural white paper shell that covers it, leaving the clove intact.

At bedtime, put the clove into the vagina. In the morning, remove the garlic clove and throw it in the toilet. The garlic often causes the vagina to have a watery discharge.

One night’s treatment may be enough to kill the infection, or it might have to be repeated the next night. Continue one or two days until all itchiness is gone.

The reason that the treatment is done at bedtime is that there is a connection between the mouth and the vagina. The moment the garlic is placed in the vagina, the taste of the garlic travels up to the mouth. Most people will find this strong flavor annoying during the day, so the treatment is recommended for nighttime.

Try this, I hope it helps.

How to Apply Glitter Eye Makeup

How to Apply Glitter Eye Makeup

Do you want to make your eyes sparkle? Wearing eye makeup that contains glitter is a great way to increase your glam factor. Glitter is a fun way to dress up your everyday look. You can choose to make the look subtle, or use it as the focal point of your whole makeup scheme. Take care to learn to properly apply glitter eye makeup.

Method One of Three:
Creating a Smoky EyeEdit

Choose the right product. Creating a smoky eye using glitter shadow is a great way to create a sultry, dramatic look. There is a wide array of glittery eye-shadows from which you can choose. One of the most important things to consider is which color of shadow you want. For example, if you are trying to create a more subtle look, try a shadow that closely matches your natural skin tone. This method will make your eyes appear to sparkle. [1]If you want to highlight your eye color, glitter eye-shadow can help you do that. To make brown eyes pop, use a cream shade. To make green eyes glow, try a shadow with a reddish tint.Any of these color palettes can be used to create a smoky eye. Gray is also great for smoky eyes, and works on all skin tones.Glitter eye makeup comes in many different forms. You can buy eyeshadow pencils, powders, or gels.If this is your first time using glitter, try purchasing an eyeshadow palette. This will let you experiment with multiple shades.

Gather your supplies. Once you have chosen the right glitter shadow, it is time to achieve the look you want. Take a couple of minutes to make sure that you have everything you need. To start with, you'll need the shadow and a tool to help you apply it. [2]You can apply eye shadow using your finger, a sponge, a brush, or a Q-tip. Many people prefer using a silicone brush as it is sturdier and can better handle the weight of a glitter shadow.Have tissues nearby to help you clean up any stray glitter.Make sure that you have a gentle eye-makeup remover handy in case you need to remove the shadow and start over.

Use primer. A primer is a base that you apply before putting on your actual makeup. It will typically be a clear liquid, but is sometimes in powder or gel form. Using your finger, apply a small amount of shadow primer to each of your eyelids. This will create a smooth palette for your shadow and make it last longer. [3]You can purchase eyeshadow primer at any drugstore or department store. Remember, a little goes a long way.

Apply the base shadow. Once your eyes and your tools are ready, it is time to put the glitter shadow on your eyes. Try using several different shades to create a dramatic effect. Begin by applying a charcoal gray shadow. Use a medium brush to cover your lid with shadow. [4]Then, use a slightly darker shade to color the inner and outer corner of your eyes. This will help highlight them.

Use multiple colors of glitter shadow.Different shades are what create the smoky look. Next, you want to apply the darkest of your shadows. Using a brush, apply a thin line of dark shadow across the crease of your eyelid. This will help create the smoky effect.Remember, it is easier to add more shadow than to take it away. Start with less than you think you might need. You can always apply more.Blend the colors. Blending the complimentary colors will help create a softer, yet still dramatic, look. For this step, you can use either your finger or a brush. Lightly smudge each of the colors together so that they are no longer sharply defined.[5]

Color the bottom lid. To create a true smoky eye, you need to focus on your lower lid, too. Use a gunmetal shade for this step. Use a small, firm brush and press shadow along your lower lid line. [6]To keep the look from being too severe, use a light silver shadow to lighten the overall effect. Place a small amount in the inner corner of each of your eyes.

Method Two of Three:
Making a Glittery Cat EyeEdit

Get the right supplies. A cat eye can add an extra wow factor to your look. To make the cat eye pop even more, use eyeliners with glitter in them. To create the perfect cat eye, you will need two different kinds of liner. [7]You will need a gel eyeliner pot. You will also need an eyeliner brush.Additionally, you will need a felt-tipped liquid liner. One or both of these liners can be glittery.

Create your outline. Start with the gel liner and the eyebrow brush. Dip the brush in the pot of liner. Draw a line with the brush from the outer corner of your eye towards your temple. Try drawing a line approximately 1/8 of an inch long. You can make it longer if you want. [8]This is the "tail" of your cat eye.Using the same gel liner, create a series of dots along your upper lash line. Start the dots about 1/4 of the way in from the inner corner of your eye.

Fill in the lines. Now you are ready to fill in the outline that you have begun. Using the gel liner again, draw dashes between the dots. This creates a solid line of eyeliner across your lid. [9]Now it is time to connect the tail and the line. Using the gel liner, return to the tail. Draw a small triangle that connects to the line of dots and dashes. This should be a diagonal line that comes off of the tail and angles towards the line across your lid.Fill in the triangle shape using the felt-tipped liquid liner.

Prevent a mess. You don't want to end up with glitter on the rest of your face. Your look will look best if the glitter stays on your eyes. Take steps to keep the glitter from drifting down onto the rest of your face. [10]As you are applying the eyeshadow with one hand, hold a tissue beneath your eye with the other hand. This will catch any fallout that occurs.Do your eye makeup first. That way, if you make a mistake, you can start over without having to reapply your foundation, blush, or lipstick.

Method Three of Three:
Using Multiple Glittery ProductsEdit

Put glitter on your eyebrows. Glittery eyebrows are a major fashion trend right now. You can accomplish the look as long as you have a few specific tools. You will need an eyebrow brush, eyeshadow brush, a glitter base (or lash glue) and make-up grade glitter. Do not use glitter that is intended for crafts or other uses.[11]Brush your brows into place with the brow brush. Next, use the shadow brush to completely cover your brows.Dip the shadow brush into the glitter and press onto your eyebrow. Cover your brows with glitter.Use the brow brush to comb through the glitter, making sure your entire brow is covered.

Wear a glittery liner. Once you have a perfectly shadowed eye, it is time to apply the rest of your makeup. For extra pop, consider using an eyeliner with a glittery shimmer. This will enhance your look, even if you are not doing a cat eye or smoky eye. [12]Use a lighter liner if you want to make the glitter eyeshadow the focal point. Use a dramatic black liner if you are going for more of a sultry look.Using a glitter liner is a great way to experiment without committing to a full glittery eye.

Make your eyelashes glitter. Your eyelashes are a great way to get creative with glitter. You can try a mascara that contains a little bit of sparkle. These products come in different colors, and have different amounts of glitter. Try swiping a coat on your lashes for some extra sparkle. [13]If you want to ease into using glitter, apply one coat of your normal mascara. After allowing it to dry for 10 seconds, follow with a coat of glitter mascara.Try pairing the glittery mascara with a sparkly lipstick. Your look will be festive and fun.

Finished.

Practice makes perfect. Experiment with different styles of makeup and see which look is best.

Make sure that the glitter you purchase is made for eyes.

How to Have Light Skin

How to Have Light Skin

Though many people work hard to make their skin look darker, some prefer to lighten it to hide scars, even out blemishes, undo the effects of over-tanning, or simply achieve a fair-skinned look. To have light skin, try the following tricks and techniques.

Method One of Three:
In Your FridgeEdit

Squeeze on the lemon juice. Lemon juice is commonly used to lighten hair and can even be added to the white cycle of your laundry as a bleach alternative. You can spot-apply lemon juice to dark spots as a lightening agent, but note that the citric acid is harsh and can irritate your skin. If you want to use lemon juice regularly or over large areas, consider diluting it or creating a gentler paste by mixing it with honey or yogurt. You can mix lemon juice with water in a spray bottle, rub the rind on your skin, or make masks and lotions. No specific way is guaranteed to work faster than any other. Be patient; lightening your skin with lemon takes time.[1]Don't use lemons on areas that have been recently waxed, shaved, or have cuts.

Apply plain yogurt. In addition to the fact that yogurt is a very gentle bleaching agent, it contains lactic acid that moisturizes, zinc that combats sunburn, and active cultures that attack harmful bacteria and fungi. In comparison to formulated, exfoliating products, yogurt doesn't exactly come up to snuff. It contains about .9% free acid; it's Alpha Hydroxy Acid levels are considerably lower than most other alternatives.[2]It won't hurt you, but it may not give you the results you're looking for. At the very least, certainly not quickly.

Use baking soda. Baking soda is commonly used as a household cleaner and tooth whitener, but it can also lighten skin. Though it is relatively gentle, note that over-applying can have a drying effect; to create a more skin-friendly paste, mix baking soda with honey, apply it as a mask, and let it sit for at least ten minutes.Baking soda is used as an exfoliant.[3]It won't lighten the skin you're in, but it can remove sun-damaged skin cells that have darkened.

Method Two of Three:
Creams, Exfoliants & PowdersEdit

Wash and exfoliate your skin. This helps remove the outermost layer of skin that is darkened and/or damaged by contact with the sun. Avoid over-exfoliating, however, as this can interfere with you skin’s natural oil production and cause greasiness. One cheap and effective homemade exfoliant is brown sugar mixed with honey. On its own, honey can make skin feel remarkably soft; coupled with the gritty sugar texture, the two make for a very effective scrub. As a bonus, honey is an antibacterial agent[4] that can help keep you from breaking out.

Wear a shimmering powder. By scattering light, the powder will not only make your skin appear brighter, but also even out blemishes.Baby powder can do this, too. It's light enough to fill in your pores like a powder foundation, but heavy (and white) enough to subtly affect your skin tone. Make sure not to apply too much, though, or you'll end up looking like an 18th-century Geisha.

If all else fails, use a skin-lightening cream. Be forewarned, however, that hydroquinone – the active ingredient in many bleaching creams – has been banned in many countries due to studies suggesting that it is carcinogenic.Bearberry (Beta-Arbutin) and kojic acid are also recent trends in skin lightening. However, recently bearberry has been linked to hydroquinone and has also been deemed unsafe[5]; kojic acid, on the other hand, has passed its tests. Used at levels of 2% (no higher) in cosmetic products, it's safe. Note: in lab testing, skin lightening results were seen at 4%.[6]

Method Three of Three:
For Your BodyEdit

Stay out of the sun. If you have to exercise, join a gym or hit the road before dawn or after dusk. Wear a brimmed hat when necessary and don’t forget to wear sunscreen daily – even if it’s cloudy outside. Up to 80% of the sun's rays can pass through clouds. [7]Don't forget your lips! Slather on a lip balm that has built in SPF 15 in addition to your daily moisturizer.

Practice healthy skin habits. A healthy glow is important to any skin tone. While you're working on the getting your skin a bit fairer, keep to a routine that will let your skin radiate brilliance.Don't smoke. It causes a sallow, uneven skin tone that can easily show up in young people. The habit can also increase the likelihood of developing sun spots, a mark usually reserved for the elderly.[8]Keep a nutritious, healthy diet. In particular, up the vitamin C. It's key to the production of collagen, a protein that aids in the growth of cells and blood vessels and gives skin its firmness and strength.[9]

Seek the advice of a dermatologist. A professional will be able to run you through all your options if you're dead-set on altering your skin tone. There are over-the-counter and prescription products they may be able to set you up with that are safe and more effective. In addition, they can debunk the myths that abound about skin care and provide knowledge that no website can parallel. Talk to your doctor before you take any serious action.

Use the natural methods first as the effects of the lightening creams are usually reversible.

Hydrogen peroxide can be found in many skin lightening creams, so when all else fails, you can at your own risk mix a very little amount in a face mask. Be careful, though. Hydrogen peroxide has many possible side effects.

Be reasonable. If you are naturally chocolate brown, be happy for your skin color. Many people would do anything for tanned skin.

Staying out of the sun can help decrease sunburn and freckles.

Wear sunscreen daily and stay out from the sun.

Do not over exfoliate your skin. Exfoliating twice a day will help to cleanse and lighten your skin without too much pressure.

Start by rubbing your skin gently with salt, then rinse your face with warm water and dry. For the best results do it twice a day.

Overuse of any product can dry out your skin, leading to flakiness and irritation.

Avoid putting hydrogen peroxide on your skin. Though it will temporarily bleach it, it is an oxidizing agent (i.e. the opposite of those healthful antioxidants we use to keep our skin from aging prematurely) and can have a corrosive effect.[10] For this reason, hydrogen peroxide is no longer even recommended for treating wounds.

WTF! Women Now Use Their Period For Facial Treatment (Photos)

A self-described ‘blood witch’ who caused a social media storm by giving herself a menstrual facial wants to inspire scores of other women to do the same thing.

Earlier this month Australian Yazmina Jade, 26, collected the blood from her period and smeared it on to her face in a ‘sacred ritual’ which went viral.

Now, the Gold Coast feminine healer has encouraged women across the globe to stop hiding their menstrual cycle by following her lead – and share their results.

Former hairdresser Yazmina said she felt a ‘blood bond’ with the women who took part. Yazmina said: “I felt an overwhelming gratitude and love to support women in reclaiming the feminine.

“When I first posted this online, I was being contacted by women who were realizing how much shame they had held because of their menstrual cycle.

“There has definitely been a reclaiming of the collective feminine. “It’s about the coming together through a blood bond and lifting each other up.”

Yazmina said the beauty trend is reconnecting women because they can now discuss the ‘whispered-about’ issue of periods in public.

She said some of the backlash she received was tied to a societal stigma around witches. Yazmina plans to continue to take the movement a step further by hosting a group conference for women to perform the ceremony. And she has slammed the critics who have accused her of being ‘sick’ on social media.

She added:

“Women can now talk about this stuff. “This is getting the message out to allow people to understand it’s not scary to let go of the shame.

“There’s a lot of fear around the witch title from the Pagan era. It’s a fear of the unknown that comes from an old belief system.”

Yazmina believes menstrual cycles are mired in shame. When the stunt first went viral last week, Yazmina said: “This was a sacred ritual to reconnect with my body. As women, we’re deeply disconnected with our bodies because of societal shame.

“I decided to place the blood all over my face, and taste it to reclaim that part of myself. I could truly embody all that I was.”

She admits there has been some critics, with some trolls on social media telling her, ‘you’re sick,’ ‘you need a mental institution,’ and ‘why would you put that on your face.’

But she said these are equaled in force by supporters, who have told her, ‘this is incredible, this is just what we need’, and she has some strong words for those who stand in opposition.

Yazmina said:

“There is too much taboo surrounding this natural cycle. By showing this publicly, I think it shows that it’s actually ok to feel connected to it.”

One of the women who decided to give themselves a period facial after seeing Yazmina’s stunt was Emmajane Love, a love coach who also hails from the Gold Coast, who said she took part in the movement to reconnect with her body.

Emmajane, known as EJ, said:

“I was feeling very disconnected with myself as a woman and carrying too much shame around my period.” “Reclaiming this has had a profound impact on my life, and I think the online movement is now giving permission for women to do the same thing.

“I feel like this was bound to happen at some point. People in my community have been talking about it for a while. “The only difference is that social media is bringing things into the light that were once taboo.”

Disadvantage of couple life in school

Disadvantage of couple life in school

Campus cohabitation is a common practice among students that should not be encouraged because of its effects on students academic goals.

Single at home but married on campus  (Naijacast)

Couples life or Campus Cohabitation is a very common trend among students in higher institutions.

It is a practice that involves students of opposite sex that are not officially married to live in an off-campus apartment as husband and wife.

Couple's life as this practice is known among students allows undergraduates in a relationship to do everything together as though they are legally married.

This, although has been argued, could help the students to better understand themselves when they eventually get married.

While this could be true as stories of campus couple who end up getting married abound, it is not a practice that should be encouraged as this could damage the academic dream of the so-called couple.

Essentially, the common stories of campus cohabitation are usually tied to accommodation issues female students usually face when they gain admission into a university or polytechnic, where there are insufficient hostels for new students.

The need to solve accommodation problem is most likely the reason fresh female students on campus decide to stay in a male student's apartment with the hope that when he graduates, the apartment 'll belong to them.

Usually, this is the narrative that leads to campus cohabitation. A new female student has problems with accommodation and a male staylite solves the problem...and the relationship starts.

However, the probability of campus cohabitation leading to marriage is not certain and here are reasons you should not consider cohabiting with a guy on campus.

1. Playing the wife's role

Campus cohabitation can derail your academic dream when you decide to play the wife's role because you want to please your partner. Your academic performance will certainly suffer if you choose to be the one who cooks, cleans the house and washes his clothes while your lover sprawls his legs and moves about.

2. Unwanted Pregnancy

Sex plays a major role in the life of campus couples and when this leads to an unwanted pregnancy, the lady will be more affected than the guy.

3. Emotional Trauma

As stated earlier, cohabiting does not guarantee marriage. In fact, it is so uncertain that your partner can wake up one day and say he is tired of the relationship.

In another instance, if you cohabit with a violent guy, you might end up becoming his punch bag, and if a guy also finds himself cohabiting with a nagging female student,   she might stifle life out of him. In the end, their academic pursuit will bear the brunt when emotional trauma sets in.
